So, it’s the holiday season again. Isn’t it great?
Well, I know it’s too late for Xmas gifts now, but you might want to consider New Year gifts. If you don’t know what to buy for a geek, here’s a little flowchart that will help you decide.
Too bad my girlfriend and parents already decided what to give me, I’d love something from this chart. Maybe next year.

Since this is the 42nd TQL, it ought to reference H2G2. So it does.
Yesterday, I found out that my girlfriend’s birthday coincides with the Towel Day.
So, I’m already feeling even more geeky. And I love her so much ![]()
Yesterday I installed the latest Kubuntu release, version 7.10 nicknamed Gutsy Gibbon. I decided to install the 64-bit version, being told it’s a little faster but many things don’t run on it.
So far, I’ve had problems with Skype and Java, but I managed to get Skype running soon, and there is a workaround for Java. So compatibility issues are only a minor issue
Also, I decided to explore the world of Compiz, a 3D desktop manager. I must say it’s great, apparently my machine is fast enough to not cause any lag, so I’ll keep using it. There’s just something special about having four desktops on a rotating cube, while your windows are all partially transparent, depending on how long they were out of focus. It’s not really stable yet, so it’s not included in the distribution, but I haven’t run into any problems with it. It just looks so cool
But with a fresh OS, there’s another thing every geek needs: a game. I installed Battle for Wesnoth, a turn-based strategy with a fantasy settings of men, elves, dwarves and of course the undead. The graphics quality is just below Civ3’s level, so it’s not really impressives, but gameplay >> graphics any time. I like the game very much, so I guess I’ll have to watch out if I don’t want to get addicted again.
One nerd says to another:
“My parents are out of town for the whole weekend. Isn’t it great?”
The other one replies:
“You lucky bastard! Now you’ll be able to study out loud all weekend!”
Once upon a time, when Earth was still a beautiful place, an evil force came to turn all living things into Vegetarians.
Three students from suburban Massachusetts would step up against this catastrophe… to end Vegetarian Supremacy.
Mark, Jesús, Maria and their foes would make amazing personal discoveries as the two forces clash.
And so began the ultimate saga about pride, heritage, sex and explosions.
The saga is an acted RPG-like short movie in 4 episodes, definately worth wathing. See it on www.collegesaga.com.
Click here for a very long list of them. One of the best sites I’ve seen in a long time.
Computer Stupidities
Example:
Customer: “My computer’s telling me I performed an illegal abortion.”
